Q1: Analyse how the writer explores his connection to the beach setting.

The Kumara harvest by Catherine Norman is a story about a boy that spent some of his child hood at the beach. The boys mother dies and his Father is left with no choice to leave the beach. The boy then returns to the beach when he has a family of his own. The boy has a very deep and personal connection with the beach as it was where most of the memories with his mother were. He also has some deep Maori history in the area. For example, when the boy says, “this time would have heralded the start of the Kumara Harvest”. This quote is showing that he has a depth knowledge and connection about the area.

The writer uses language features like personification to help us create an image in our head to further engage us in the text. For example, “The white surf is tossed violently upwards”. This quote is describing the ocean to get us to relate to one of our experiences to add an emotional connection which will get the reader more engaged. This is another example of personification, “
